Bee Friendly Garden
For Bee Aware Month 2021, Apiculture New Zealand is asking Kiwis to ‘Feed the Bees’ by planting bee-friendly trees and plants. https://apinz.org.nz/bee-aware-month-2021/ So that’s exactly what we have done. We have created a Bee friendly garden outside our classroom to hopefully attract some bees.
This is what we know about bees … We have been learning about bees, We have learnt… that bees have a lot of different features to help them make pollen into honey. So bees get the pollen then they bring it back to their hive. Bees use fresh pollen to feed larvae, Then they store the excess pollen into honey cells, where it is packed into layers and fermented to become bee bread. The bee bread is then fed to the larvae. A larvae is a second step in the bee life cycle before it turns into a pupa then into a bee.
To make our garden… The tools we had were our hands, a gardening fork, and a shovel. What we had to do was pull the bark away so the planter box would be even with the ground. Then we filled in the sides with some bark. So then we started putting the soil in which we lined up and took turns to do. After it was full to the top we started planting the flowers. Miss Strange then chose two people per flower, one would dig the hole and the other person would put the flower in. After all the flowers were planted Miss Strange filled up the watering can and we watered the plants. Once the plants were fully watered Miss Strange took the photos of the year 5’s. Then the Year 6’s. This was a great experience for everyone. It was a great day for it too.

Room 4 would like to say a big thank you to Michele Strange from Jennian Homes Ashburton for donating the flowers, soil and watering can for our garden. Another big thank you goes to Paddy Strange for building our planter box! We are very lucky!
